The Donkey Mill Art Center

(808) 322-3362
The Donkey Mill Art Center offers a 5-week Summer Art Experience for children and youth ages 6 through 12th grade. This year’s program will begin on Monday, June 15th. The emphasis of the program is to provide participants with the opportunity to experience a multitude of artistic media in a safe, nurturing environment that fosters self-expression.

We believe that art can help people of all ages increase their ability to express themselves, focus on one task, follow directions and try new things- just to name a few!

The participants begin each day with a group stretching and movement exercise on towels outside. Then they are broken into small groups and rotate through various work stations. Lunch, brought daily from home, is enjoyed out on the grass. Healthy, non-microwaveable food is the focus for both snacks and lunch. This year, a lot of attention will be given to the Garden Project. Here food will be grown to be enjoyed both as a snack and by letting it inspire their art. The 5-week focus will include the environment and our need to care for it so it can care for us.

The Summer Art Experience will run from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Monday-Friday for a tuition fee of $600, plus a $45 Family Membership Fee to join the Holualoa Foundation for Arts and Culture. The annual membership fee can be used again anytime during the year to receive a discounted tuition rate. Some concern about such an early pick-up time has been raised and the four Youth Instructors are interested in working with families to make the 5 weeks as stress-free as possible. If you are interested, but would need another hour in the afternoon to make transportation feasible, please let us know when you call in.

The YWCA Summer Fun Program is now providing children ages 4 years 8 months old through 13 years an opportunity to express creativity and originality, promote independent initiative and foster social and emotional growth. Daily activities are planned throughout the program which includes: swimming in our solar heated pool 3 days a week, walking trips, bus trips, special events, and various types of crafts and games.

Summer Fun begins June 15th and ends July 24th with 3 separate sessions. We will also be offering extended summer fun from June 9th through 12th and July 27th and 28th at our daily drop in rate. Breakfast and lunch is included during our 3 session program at no additional charge.

The YWCA School Age staff is excited and eager in making this summer a fun filled and entertaining learning experience for all of our keiki. Registration is open through the start date of each session. We look forward to meeting you. YWCA Hawai'i Island, 145 Ululani, Hilo.
